Aragonés' Spanish reprieve appals anti-racism activists

Spain's football federation and courts yesterday came under fire for undermining the work of anti-racist campaigners after the judiciary overturned a decision that had criticised the national team manager, Luis Aragonés, for "conduct which could be considered racist". Aragonés's offensive comments about Thierry Henry to José Antonio Reyes were widely televised in October 2004, leading to a £1,900 fine from the Spanish football federation for unsporting conduct. That was upgraded to a racism charge by the government-run Spanish Committee for Sporting Discipline, a verdict which both Aragonés and his employer challenged in the Madrid courts. They ruled in his favour yesterday, with the Spanish federation saying in a statement: "The court found that the Spanish Committee for Sporting Discipline had incorrectly evaluated the evidence.

This means we'll see a few more black movies and documentaries on TV and a few more photos of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.Fortunately, I have learned throughout the years that black history is much deeper than the typical, generic displays of celebration that we see during the month of February. This year, Black History Month has a much fuller meaning to me, though. I, like much of black America, have experienced discrimination before. However, almost six months ago the evil head of ignorance peeked through my door and really hit close to home. After my daughter, Taylor, and I moved out of Georgetown to embark on what we call another adventure, I developed an even greater pride in being black in America.

The pupils have missed out on more than five days of school. The people who committed this hateful crime more than likely were taught that those people were different. Just because you allow those people to sit beside you does not mean you are not racist. The race is often called "the toughest 24 hours in motor sports." Reporter James Spring was at mile marker 177 near San Felipe, Mexico. Hundreds of race fans camped out near pit row to watch more than 400 racers battle the desert and the dust for the SCORE-International Baja 1000. It's the world's longest point-to-point race. The 1,000 mile race is open to motorcycles and a wide range of four-wheeled vehicles, including the crowd favorite – the Trophy Trucks. They're massive 700-horse-powered dune buggies that resemble pumped up pick-up trucks. They're known as trophy trucks because their drivers tend to take home the race's top prizes. One was driven again this year by NASCAR star Robby Gordon. The event attracts plenty of star power. First, for the overall winners, Claire Gildard took top female honors with a time of 22:29, Anna Weeks came in second with a time of 28:58 and Alison Smith was third at 23:02. In the male category, David Dunson came in first with a time of 17:49; his 8-year-old son Simon came in first in the age group up to eight years old with a time of 25:01; and 10-year-old son Sam came in first in the 9- to 10-year-old age group with a time of 22:03. Chapel Hill High School teacher Mike Belcher was second overall at 17:51, and John Mignosa was third overall at 19:06. Anee Carlsteen was first in the female age group up to 9 years old at 31:43. The Rugby Football Union rejects any allegations that New Zealand players were racially abused by England supporters during the Investec Challenge match at Twickenham Stadium in November 2005. Aaron Mauger claimed several All Blacks were racially abused by sections of the Twickenham crowd during last year's grand slam tour victory. RFU Chief Executive Francis Baron OBE said: "No allegations of any racist abuse were made during or after that game and it is puzzling why they have now been made a year later. Rugby is an inclusive game for all and the RFU abhors any form of discrimination or abuse based on colour, creed, sexual orientation or disability. IAN Thorpe is likely to swim just one event at the national trials in Brisbane next month because he is still struggling to regain full health after the illness that ruled him out of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March. Thorpe withdrew from the Games with bronchitis but was eventually diagnosed with glandular fever and has been unable to resume his regular training load due to the lingering symptoms of the energy-sapping virus. His coach Tracey Menzies said yesterday they were now debating which single event he should target after such a severely disrupted preparation. Thorpe had initially intended to swim the 100m and 200m freestyle, as he did successfully at the Commonwealth Games trials, but Menzies said she was concerned that the workload would be too much given his fragile health.

Johnson finally takes lead in Chase race

His second-place finish Sunday in the Dickies 500 at the Texas Motor Speedway, coupled with Matt Kenseth's 12th-place finish, moved Johnson in the points lead heading into next Sunday's race at Phoenix. FT. WORTH - Terry Labonte called it the Shifting Gears Farewell Tour. Starting back in 2005, he planned to run a limited race schedule for two seasons and call it a career in his home state. Texas Motor Speedway marked the final stop. Labonte the center of attention for all the pre-race festivities. Terry was joined by members of the Hendrick Motorsports Team. He drove for Hendrick for 11 full-time seasons. But when you're a part time racer, you get a part time car and that's what Labonte ended up with Sunday. Terry's daughter Kristen Labonte gave her dad the starting order for the Dickie's 500. Along side the car Lebonte drove Sunday was the car he drove to victory in the 1980 Southern 500. Both cars led the field around on the parade lap. But it would be the only time Texas Terry found the front of the pack.
