Aragonés' Spanish reprieve appals anti-racism activists

Spain's football federation and courts yesterday came under fire for undermining the work of anti-racist campaigners after the judiciary overturned a decision that had criticised the national team manager, Luis Aragonés, for "conduct which could be considered racist". Aragonés's offensive comments about Thierry Henry to José Antonio Reyes were widely televised in October 2004, leading to a £1,900 fine from the Spanish football federation for unsporting conduct. That was upgraded to a racism charge by the government-run Spanish Committee for Sporting Discipline, a verdict which both Aragonés and his employer challenged in the Madrid courts. They ruled in his favour yesterday, with the Spanish federation saying in a statement: "The court found that the Spanish Committee for Sporting Discipline had incorrectly evaluated the evidence.

Today is the first day of Black History Month, or African-American History Month if you are partial to being politically correct. This means we'll see a few more black movies and documentaries on TV and a few more photos of Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks.Fortunately, I have learned throughout the years that black history is much deeper than the typical, generic displays of celebration that we see during the month of February. This year, Black History Month has a much fuller meaning to me, though. I, like much of black America, have experienced discrimination before. However, almost six months ago the evil head of ignorance peeked through my door and really hit close to home. After my daughter, Taylor, and I moved out of Georgetown to embark on what we call another adventure, I developed an even greater pride in being black in America.

More than 50 West Coast pupils have been accommodated at a new school after they refused to return to Vredenburg High, where they claim to be victims of racism. The pupils have missed out on more than five days of school. They are now being accommodated at Weston High, the only other high school in Vredenburg, which is located in a predominately coloured residential area. The bilge pump could not handle the amount of water that needed to be removed so we were forced to resort to the old fashion method of a bunch of us guys forming a good old bucket brigade. It pokes about in places we least expect it, and very seldom are we willing or able to acknowledge it. Laws can be passed to further the battle for equal rights. Thoughts, however, cannot be regulated. Racism arises from a thought process. For hundreds of years, we have been conditioned to think less of those people. The people who committed this hateful crime more than likely were taught that those people were different. Just because you allow those people to sit beside you does not mean you are not racist. Just because you do not exploit them economically or do you? does not mean you are not racist. Its great that this article was on the front page.
