Steer leads Copper Basin race

A cadre of Canadians was chasing Sheep Mountain's Zack Steer across a snowy Nelchina Basin on Sunday night as the Copper Basin 300 Sled Dog Race wound its way back toward the Glennallen start/finish line. Snow was falling lightly as the lead teams left Meier's Lake Roadhouse and headed back into the rolling hills south of the Tangle Lakes, race officials reported, but the National Weather Service was warning that could change significantly overnight. The agency posted a snow advisory through 9 a.m. today, warning of 5 to 15 inches and winds up to 25 mph. Race officials said the mushers had snowmachines in front of them to help break trail, but if the snow gets deep -- and particularly if the trail blows in, as often happens on the run from Meier's Lake to Lake Louise -- Steer's 30-minute leader over Sebastian Schnuelle of Whitehorse, Yukon Territory could disappear.
