Rusty Carrigan to race at Coast

ATHENS Olympic gold medal winner Sara Carrigan will compete in this weekend's elite women's cycling race on the Gold Coast, despite fearing she'll just be making up the numbers following a seven-month break from the sport. Carrigan was reluctant to enter the street criterium at Surfers Paradise on Sunday after just four weeks of training but she didn't want to miss a rare opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd. "If I race I don't want to just roll around and be a number," the Gold Coast-based cyclist said before later confirming she would compete. "It's a tough decision because they're aren't too many races for girls on home soil. "We race overseas all year and we never have a chance for our friends and families to watch us." Carrigan, 26, said she had lost a lot of upper body strength but was delighted with her progress in her comeback to elite cycling.
