School briefs: 13-year-olds, family win race

CHAPEL HILL -- The top three female winners in the 5K Race for Education were all 13 years old, and the three male winners all came from the same family. First, for the overall winners, Claire Gildard took top female honors with a time of 22:29, Anna Weeks came in second with a time of 28:58 and Alison Smith was third at 23:02. In the male category, David Dunson came in first with a time of 17:49; his 8-year-old son Simon came in first in the age group up to eight years old with a time of 25:01; and 10-year-old son Sam came in first in the 9- to 10-year-old age group with a time of 22:03. Chapel Hill High School teacher Mike Belcher was second overall at 17:51, and John Mignosa was third overall at 19:06. Anee Carlsteen was first in the female age group up to 9 years old at 31:43. Madeline Brobst was first in the 9-10 female group at 28:45; Lydia Renn was first in the 11-12 female group at 24:07, and Brady Strine was first in the same male group at 21:27.
