Dewhurst gets a jump on 2010 race

AUSTIN - On Election Day eve, what better subject is there to talk about than the governor's race? That would be the 2010 governor's race, because it already is under way and has been for a while. Even before we know the winner of this year's five-way race, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst is off and running for next time, hoping through a display of electoral strength on Tuesday to discourage would-be contenders in the 2010 Republican primary. The only mystery about Dewhurst's re-election race is how deeply he will bury two mostly unknown opponents Democrat Maria Luisa Alvarado of San Antonio and Libertarian Judy Baker of Houston. Yet, in recent weeks, he has spent more than $3 million on television advertising more than some gubernatorial candidates and several hundred thousand dollars on slick mailouts, presenting himself as a protector of children who will crack down on sexual predators and improve the public schools.
