Ailing Thorpie sticks to one race

IAN Thorpe is likely to swim just one event at the national trials in Brisbane next month because he is still struggling to regain full health after the illness that ruled him out of the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in March. Thorpe withdrew from the Games with bronchitis but was eventually diagnosed with glandular fever and has been unable to resume his regular training load due to the lingering symptoms of the energy-sapping virus. His coach Tracey Menzies said yesterday they were now debating which single event he should target after such a severely disrupted preparation. Thorpe had initially intended to swim the 100m and 200m freestyle, as he did successfully at the Commonwealth Games trials, but Menzies said she was concerned that the workload would be too much given his fragile health.
